Most websites tell you to clean your dryer vent once a year. That’s a safe starting point, but it’s not the real answer. After ten years of cleaning dryer vents across the Bay Area, we’ve seen homes where once a year isn’t enough — and others where every two or three years is fine.
The honest answer is: it depends on your setup. Here’s what actually determines how often your dryer vent needs cleaning.
Vent Length Matters More Than Anything
A dryer pushes hot, moist air through the vent along with tiny lint particles that slip past the lint trap. When the vent run is short — say, the dryer sits against an exterior wall and the vent goes straight out — the airflow is strong enough to push most lint outside. These setups stay cleaner longer.
But when the dryer is in the middle of the house and the vent runs up through the attic and out the roof, that’s a different situation. The longer the run, the more velocity drops, and the more lint settles inside the vent instead of making it outside.
Every Elbow Adds Distance
This is the part most people don’t realize. Each 90-degree turn in your vent adds roughly the equivalent of five feet of straight run. A 45-degree elbow adds about three feet. So a vent that looks like a short run on paper might actually behave like a much longer one once you count the bends.
We’ve seen vents that are only eight feet long in a straight line but have three 90-degree turns — that’s effectively a 23-foot run. The airflow in a vent like that drops significantly, and lint builds up faster. For setups like this, we sometimes recommend cleaning every six months.
Household Size and Dryer Usage
A single person running the dryer once or twice a month can go years between cleanings. A family of five running loads every day is a completely different situation. More loads means more lint, and it adds up fast.
We always ask: how many people live in the home, and how often is the dryer running? If it’s running daily, annual cleaning is the minimum. If kids, grandparents, or extended family are in the house and the dryer is going nonstop, twice a year is safer.
The Customers Who Didn’t Know They Needed It
This is something we see constantly. A homeowner calls us for air duct cleaning or a chimney sweep. While we’re there, we ask if they’ve ever had their dryer vent cleaned. Most of the time the answer is no — and many didn’t even know it was something that needed to be done.

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that clothes dryers cause an estimated 2,900 home fires each year, and the leading cause is failure to clean them. Lint is highly flammable, and when airflow is restricted, the heat builds up with nowhere to go.
This isn’t a scare tactic — it’s the reason we push the free inspection. We’d rather catch a problem early than see a customer deal with something preventable.
A Simple Guide Based on What We See in the Field
If your dryer is against an exterior wall with a short, straight vent and you’re a small household: every two to three years is probably fine.
If your vent runs through the attic or roof with a few elbows and you’re a typical family: once a year.
If you have a long vent run with multiple elbows, a large household, and heavy dryer use: every six months.
